St Peters Lutheran College: Borneo 2026
A Queensland school explores Borneo’s wildlife, conservation, culture and World War II history.
In June 2026, we assisted St Peter's Lutheran College in delivering a unique educational journey through Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo.
The program brought together environmental science, conservation, history and cultural studies, giving students the opportunity to learn through direct experiences in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.
Students travelled through Sabah’s rainforest landscapes and waterways in search of native wildlife, including pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and other species unique to Borneo. They also participated in a rainforest tree-planting project, contributing to local efforts to restore native habitat.
Students visited a sea turtle conservation area, where they had the opportunity to witness endangered sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. The group also explored remote islands, traditional stilt villages and cultural sites, gaining a greater understanding of Sabah’s diverse communities, traditions and way of life.
Students visited significant World War II sites connected with the Sandakan–Ranau Death Marches of 1945, retracing sections of the route taken by Australian and British prisoners of war and learning about this difficult chapter of Australia’s wartime history.
Throughout the journey, students gained a deeper understanding of Sabah’s diverse cultures through direct interaction with local communities. They watched traditional dance performances, learned about local customs and ways of life, and took part in hands-on cultural activities, including learning to play traditional musical instruments.
For students, Sabah provides an exceptional outdoor classroom, combining conservation, environmental science, Australian history, cultural understanding and active learning within one educational journey.
