Singapore: STEAMS in Action

Singapore is an outstanding destination for secondary school groups looking to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics and Sustainability (STEAMS) beyond the classroom.
Since gaining independence in 1965, Singapore has transformed from a small island nation with limited land and natural resources into one of Asia’s most advanced economies. Central to this transformation has been long-term planning and investment in education, technology, infrastructure, innovation and the sustainable use of limited resources.
Today, Singapore provides students with a fascinating opportunity to see STEAMS in action. Across the city, students can explore how STEAMS contributed to the development of a modern nation.
An Edventure Travel STEAMS program can incorporate a range of themes.

Governance and a Vision for the Future
Learn about Singapore’s development following independence and the influence of its first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. Students can examine how long-term government policy, urban planning, and resource management contributed to Singapore’s development, while considering the challenges involved in transforming a national vision into reality.
Tourism, Technology and Innovation
Singapore has developed a world-class tourism industry that makes extensive use of technology, engineering and creative design. Students can explore attractions such as the Singapore Flyer, Sentosa Island, Universal Studios Singapore, Singapore Cable Car, Gardens by the Bay and Jewel Changi Airport.
These attractions provide opportunities to examine how engineering, technology and design can create visitor experiences while contributing to Singapore's international tourism industry.
Major Infrastructure
Singapore's infrastructure provides real-world examples of large-scale engineering and planning. Students can investigate Changi Airport, the Port of Singapore, the MRT network and Marina Barrage, exploring themes such as transport engineering, water security, logistics, connectivity and sustainable infrastructure.
Architecture and Engineering
Singapore's skyline features an impressive combination of skyscrapers, hotels, shopping centres, public spaces and environmentally conscious buildings.
Landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands demonstrate how engineering, architecture and innovative design can work together. Across Singapore, students can also investigate how architects are incorporating greenery, energy efficiency and sustainability into a densely populated urban environment.
Science, Technology and Interactive Learning
Singapore has invested heavily in making science and technology accessible to younger generations.
At the Science Centre Singapore, students can explore scientific principles through practical and interactive exhibits. At the ArtScience Museum, exhibitions such as teamLab's Future World: Where Art Meets Science demonstrate how digital technology, coding, sensors, projection and creative design can combine to create interactive environments.
Housing and Sustainable Communities
Singapore's Housing & Development Board (HDB) provides an excellent case study in urban and social planning.
Students can examine how public housing communities incorporate transport connections, recreational areas, accessibility, green spaces, cycling infrastructure and renewable technologies such as solar energy. It provides an opportunity to consider an important question: How do you design a liveable city when land is extremely limited?
Students can investigate the allocation of land for housing, manufacturing, technology, transport, recreation and trade, as well as Singapore's extensive use of land reclamation. These examples demonstrate how geography, engineering, technology and long-term planning intersect in the development of a modern city-state.
A Living STEAMS Classroom
A 7-day Edventure Travel Singapore program can combine museums, infrastructure projects, innovative attractions, sustainable developments and everyday living spaces to bring classroom learning into the real world.
Students can see how science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and sustainability work together to solve real-world challenges. Singapore is STEAMS in action.
Watch our video for a brief introduction to some of the STEAMS sites, experiences and attractions students can explore in Singapore.
